Heartburn and Swallowing Disorders

Heartburn and difficulties with swallowing are common in the community. While heartburn is most often caused by reflux of acid or bile, this is not always the case and may sometimes be caused by disturbance in the muscle function (motor or pump function) of the esophagus.

Our program is supported by a state-of-the-art esophageal laboratory based at the New York Methodist Hospital. This laboratory supports the surgeon in reaching a precise analysis of esophageal function that would then guide treatment.

Nissen fundoplication is an operation that can effectively cure acid reflux and potentially eliminate need for medications in treating heartburn. This operation is performed using minimally invasive techniques.

Motor disorders of the esophagus, such as achalasia or nutcracker esophagus or esophageal diverticulum may cause difficulty swallowing or chest pain among other symptoms. These conditions are best treated by surgery which can also be done using minimally invasive techniques.

Dr. Thodiyil is fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopy and esophageal surgery.
